Huddle-up-Corn: Old Cheshire dialect for the first day of harvesting for the Little Folk, although harvesting continues for some considerable time! The Ringstone and Stonehead are decorated with chains made from flowers and the folk also have a Huddle-fire when the sun has set.
It is traditional for Little Folk to marry on this day.
Full Moon:
On August's Full Moon, the Jemmies dress up as corn sheaves to perform a special dance. Everyone comes to watch this beautiful moonlit midnight dance.
10th
Nut harvesting begins today.
The day after New Moon:
HuzzBuzz: Today the Folk take heather gifts to their bees which are kept near Roundy House. Honey is something which no Little Person could ever do without!
27th
The Great Ploughing Match: Tiny Folk make small teams to enter into this ploughing competition. A small area of sand is used every year at Sandholes Moss. The judges look for the best unbroken furrow in the sand. The winners get to take pride of place at the head of the table during the party later on in the day.
31st
End of the Corn Harvest or "The Cutting of the Last Field": When the last armful of corn is left standing, its golden heads are tied together with a piece of thistledown ribbon. Little Folk take it in turns to throw a small sickle at it until it is finally cut. The mole ladies make it into a corn-dolly and keep it safe in their house until next spring when it is mixed with the corn for planting. Everyone has a "Stampy Party" where a tasty bread made of potato and rosemary is eaten, along with a kind of porridge made from oatmeal, ale, honey and mead.
