jack, jack up     -    to abandon something (jack it in) 

Jack Nicker    -     gold finch

jacket o'muck   -    covering of manure on a field, or on an                                    unfortunate indvidual

Jack Sharp     -      stickleback

jacksonin'      -        a knocking up, a hard time 

jackstones     -      the game of jacks, played with stones by                               throwing them up and catching them 

jag, jagger      -       a load, a carter who carries loads for                                       other people 

jangle    -       "On the jangle" is a phrase equivalent to "On                          the loose"

jannock, jonnack    -       fair, straightforward 

jarg    -        (1) jolt or bang, jarr (2) to fall out, quarrel 

jarsey     -      any coarse woollen fabric (jersey) 

jawm       -      (jamb) the cross-beam over an old fashioned                           kitchen fireplace

jef      -       deaf; of ears of corn, empty; of nuts, without                           kernel. There is a phrase "He looks as if he didna                   crack many jef nuts" which means "he looks                           prosperous" 

jiblets     -     shreds, fragments

jig     -      (1) jig up - to wear out, (2)jigged up - bankrupt 

jiggeroo, jiggeroo'd     -     a kind of rot which affects                                                       potatoes, leaving brown marks                                               upon the surface 

jiggle jaggle     -     not straight

Jill     -     a female ferret 

Jimrags     -      fragments, pieces 

jimrig    -     to knock up, break or render useless 

Jinny Green-Teeth     -    a ghost or hob goblin supposed to                                           haunt wells or ponds.

Jinny-ring   -      a name given to horse-powered machinery                              because the horse moves in a circle 

Jinny-wren    -     a wren (Jenny Wren) 

jockey     -     bloke 

John Dod     -    conceit, self importance

John-Go-To-Bed-At-Noon    -     pimpernel flower 

Johnny Raw    -    an ignorant uncouth person 

jow     -     dew or slight rain 

jowmug    -    (1)a dew mug, a large earthenware mug (2) a                            potty

juff      -     to cram, stuff "Juff a rag into that hole" 

jumps     -      clothes "Sunday jumps" = Sunday best 

junner     -    to grumble or mumble (chunner)

jurdin     -      a dry stick used for firewood

just-a-meet    -      just about "It's just-a-meet ten o'clock"
